WWW.TARANTO.NZ - A Lotus 9.2 yacht

WELCOME

Welcome to the Taranto.NZ website, to introduce, promote and possibly inspire fellow sailors in New Zealand and around the world.

This is 100% sailing on a budget project, I guess frankly I shouldn't even try as I don't really qualify! At least from a financial perspective. But if folk's like Cap'n Fatty Goodlander can spend their entire life doing it (I'm a recent convert to his infectious humour and sound advice), then so can I, or at least attempt to move in that direction. Of course nothing in life is simple or straight forward, and certainly I turn my cameras on much more on the sunny days.

I'm an adventurous Kiwi who rode an old BMW motorcycle halfway around the world in the 1990's, then discovered the equally inspiring sense of freedom yachts can provide, even more so perhaps. That was almost 20 years ago and I've learned alot about the sea and maintaining vessels that want to dissolve in it since then. Its a never ending quest. Now I have a young family in northern Italy, and I'm seeking to get Taranto over to this side of the world. I hope you can join me.

But for now thanks for spending some time here, whether it's checking out the photo collection, the growing library of videos, or if you are simply interested in supporting us, in any way, you are welcome. Cheers :-)

SUPPORTERS LINKS

Supporters are always being sought and even as you read this, plans are underway for a massive sail around the world in Taranto. Seriously, get your name and product listed here by supporting in any way you can, or sponsoring Taranto in the effort to sail her from Nelson, New Zealand to Venice, Italy.

Regularly updated blog as the journey unfolds, entertaining video uploads via a YouTube channel (internet connections permitting) and special mention on all promotional material including any subsequent journalistic and published works.

And of course a permanent website link right here...

Eventually when the diesel engine finally expires we are keen to make Taranto as energy self sufficient as possible utilising an electric propulsion system, with a large battery storage capacity (such as a Tesla Powerwall for example), with solar, wind and hydro power generation capacity. Well, at least that was the case until the recent circimnavigation of the South Island where the reliability and range of diesel was shown to be very practical and safe when trying to maintain those dreaded 'deadlines'. Without significant time constraits however removing the stinkin freakin diesel is the ultimate goal.

"What does a man need - really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in – and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That's all - in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade.

The years thunder by, The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed.

Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life? "
